WITN's Teacher of the Week: Cougar Caroon from Beaufort Early College High School
WITN's Teacher of the Week for September 4 is Cougar Caroon of Beaufort Early College High School in Beaufort County.
Cougar teaches two math courses and serves as the department chair for mathematics. He started teaching there five years ago after graduation from East Carolina University.
He says he is currently working on achieving a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification.
The person who nominated Cougar wrote: "Mr. Caroon constantly goes out of his way to do the best for his students. Summer of 2018, he personally fundraised the money to purchase a 3D printer for the school. He has held classes to teach students how 3D printing works and how to design for 3D printing. This has developed a group of students that regularly 3D print, so Mr. Caroon gave us a project to design and print Christmas gift for the staff. He has also developed a competitive math team that has practices and competes in local, regional, and national competitions. He acts as a mentor for students interested in tutoring and teaching. Many of his students come back to volunteer in his classes. Even students who hate math enjoy his class and finally understand topics they typically struggle with. Overall, Mr. Caroon is an amazing teacher and a fantastic mentor."
Congratulations, Mr. Cougar!
Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The teacher receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies.
