WITN’S Teacher of the Week: Andy June of A.G. Cox Middle School
WITN's Teacher of the Week for December 12 is Andy June of A.G. Cox Middle School in Pitt County.
June is in his 13th year teaching, and all 13 years have been at A.G. Cox. He taught 6th grade math for the first six years and has been teaching 7th grade ever since. In addition to his work at the school, June was a volunteer soccer coach for seven years while also teaching karate classes at Charles June Karate Institute. June has also worked at YMCA Camp Thunderbird in Lake Wylie, South Carolina for the past 18 summers.
June says, “Teaching can be challenging at times, but I know these kids need us for not only an education but also just to be someone who will listen to them if they ever need to talk. I am fortunate enough to work with a wonderful faculty at my school that is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. I am very thankful for those teachers as well as all the teachers across our county, state, and country who give 100% each day.”
The student who nominated June wrote: “He always puts in all the work and time that he can into school, getting to school 90 minutes before school starts, and stays up to two hours after school dismisses, grading papers, lesson planning. He always does fun classroom transformations, such as his fantasy football lesson that he did about a week ago. He has to grade about 120 papers each day, and he spends his weekend not doing the things he would like to be doing, because he cares so much about his students, and he dedicates his weekend to his students, making sure we have the right things for the upcoming week. He is an amazing teacher. He always makes sure we have plenty of study guides and notes for an upcoming quiz and test, and he always makes answer keys, that shows us his work and how he solved it for every problem for every test and quiz and always makes sure we know how to work out a specific problem. I've been struggling in math some, and he has always helped me, made sure that I know why I got this problem wrong, and how I can fix it in the future. He is also very realistic with us, telling us what will be difficult and what will be easy. He is an amazing teacher and nobody earns this more than Mr. June!”
Congratulations Mr. June!
Every week during the school year WITN will recognize a Teacher of the Week on WITN News at Sunrise. The winner receives a plaque and $100 Walmart gift card. To nominate your teacher, email TOTW@witn.com.
