WITN’S Teacher of the Week: John Becker of EB Frink Middle School

LENOIR COUNTY, NC (WITN) - WITN's Teacher of the Week for September 12 is John Becker of EB Frink Middle School in Lenoir County.

Becker is in his 11th year of teaching, currently teaching 7th grade English Language Arts. He has also taught social studies. Before becoming a teacher, he had a career in the military. Becker says he’s been married for 31 years and has three sons. His entire family graduated from ECU.

Becker says he takes time to talk with his students every day, and greet them with a smile.

“I try to make each and every lesson relevant to their lives and to share many of my own personal stories with them,” Becker writes. “I have been fortunate to have traveled to 44 different countries and experience that many cultures. I am always reminding them that teachers are just people, just like their moms and dads, and that this is what we do for a living.”

The person who nominated Mr. Becker wrote, “Mr. Becker served our country in the United States Marine Corps for 24 years before returning to East Carolina University to earn his degree in Education. He has made such a positive impact on my daughter’s academics since she has been in his class. His caring, supportive, and enthusiastic attitude has encouraged her to strive to do her best to make him proud of her. I believe this same attitude is shared with all of her classmates. The rapport he has with all his students is nothing short of amazing. He regularly attends after school events to support his current students and previous students. I was able to witness this when he recently attended an after school event where other students were present and his genuine love for all the kids was so evident. His face lit up when he saw every student that attended but what was more impressive was the student’s excitement when they saw him. I believe that speaks to the positive impact he has on the students at E. B. Frink Middle School. When I mentioned it to him he said, ‘I absolutely love waking up in the morning and coming to school to see the students.’ When I spoke to Mrs. Pierce, Principal at E. B. Frink, she said, ‘He is willing to do whatever it takes for students, fellow teachers, and school success.’ He is an encouraging and positive role model for everyone but especially our future leaders of America.

Congratulations Mr Becker!
