WITN's Teacher of the Week for September 19 is Jennifer Sumerlin of Chicod School in Pitt County.
Sumerlin is in her 13th year as a teacher. She received her Bachelors Degree in education from Eastern Michigan University and her Master of Arts in Education from East Carolina University. She also obtained her National Board Certification and most recently completed the Pitt County Teacher Leadership Institute through DEEL, Division of Educator Effectiveness and Leadership.
Sumerlin writes, “Teaching middle school is challenging at times but also so rewarding. I always strive to be a teacher that my students trust and can count on. Building a positive rapport with my students is of utmost importance to me. I enjoy watching them grow and learn throughout the year and I like to think we can have a little fun while we do! I enjoy keeping in touch with my students throughout the years and celebrating their accomplishments.”
Of her family, Sumerlin writes, “I am married to my wonderful husband, Casey, and I am the mother to two amazing boys, Casey Jr who is five and Wyatt who is just about to turn 1.”
The parent who nominated Sumerlin wrote: “She has the true spirit of a teacher. She invokes deep thoughts from her students. She works so hard to make learning a positive experience for every student. She is an amazing woman, great educator and just an all-around wonderful person.”
