Bear Grass volunteer firefighter laid to rest
A volunteer firefighter from the east was laid to rest Wednesday after dying from the flu.
Funeral services were held for Bear Grass Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Dawn Harrison.
The family of Harrison, along with the Bear Grass Volunteer Fire Department, saw an outpouring of love and support at Rose Sharon Church.
Harrison's body was brought out of the church by her pallbearers from the Bear Grass Fire and Rescue Department.
She was taken to her grave less than a mile from the church on one of the firetrucks she worked on for almost 20 years.
Harrison was the first woman to serve for the department and was a staff member in E-C-U's music department.
Firefighters from across the East came to pay their respects.
Harrison is survived by her husband and her 12 year old son.
A volunteer firefighter is the latest victim of the flu here in Eastern Carolina.
Lt. Dawn Harrison, who is also an East Carolina University employee, died early Monday, according to the Bear Grass Volunteer Fire Department.
Chief Greg Harrison says the woman was their first woman firefighter, serving since 1999 with the department.
Harrison, 43, also worked for the ECU School of Music.
The chief says Harrison just took over their fire prevention program at an elementary school.
Visitation for Harrison will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Rose of Sharon Church in Bear Grass. Her funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow at the church.
Harrison is survived by her husband and a 12-year-old son.
