U.S. 17 Bypass opens today; SW Greenville Bypass next week
One major highway in Eastern Carolina is opening Thursday while another will be finished next week.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the new U.S. 17 Bypass in Jones County will have a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The 16.3-mile highway starts just below Belgade in Onslow County and connects to the existing U.S. 17 Bypass in Craven County.
Work on the $143.4 million bypass began back in October 2015 and replaces the existing 2-lane highway that goes through Maysville and Pollocksville.
Meanwhile, the DOT says the Southwest Greenville Bypass for Highway 11 will open next week.
A spokeswoman says they are still finalizing exact details for that highway opening.
That 12.6-mile stretch, south of Ayden to Greenville, will finish months ahead of schedule. The $250 million project began in August 2016.
