Third person charged in connection to the murder of Leggett mayor, his wife
A third person has been arrested in connection to the murder of an Edgecombe County mayor and his wife.
The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office charged Dakeithia Andrews, 30, of Rocky Mount with conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon on Saturday.
Legget Mayor Gary Skelton and his wife Jackie Dawn Skelton had been found dead at their home along Highway 33 West Thursday.
The bodies were discovered with gunshot wounds after deputies responded to a welfare check , Sheriff Clee Atkinson said.
Two other people have already been charged in connection to the case including Keith Williams, 25, of Tarboro and Mitchell Brinson, 18, of Taboro.
Both Williams and Brinson are facing a first degree murder charge.
Prison records show that Williams was just released from prison last Tuesday on parole after serving time for possession of a firearm by a felon.
Williams has a lengthy record with convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, larceny, and assault on a child.
The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office says they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no further danger to the public from the suspects.
The mayor of a North Carolina town and his wife have been found dead at their home.
News outlets report the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office withheld the identities of the victims found Thursday, but Leggett Town Commissioner Teresa Summerlin identified them as Mayor Gary Skelton and Jackie Dawn Skelton. The sheriff's office says suspects are in custody, but their identities haven't been disclosed.
Summerlin says Jackie Skelton was an oncology nurse at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, and didn't show up to work Thursday. Her coworkers requested a welfare check, which led to the discovery of the bodies.
Gary Skelton was a banker at BB&T in Rocky Mount until retirement. He was in his second term as mayor of the eastern North Carolina town with a population of around five dozen.

Two people were found dead at a home in Edgecombe County where records show the home is owned by the mayor of Leggett.
Edgecombe County deputies were called to a residence in Leggett to check the welfare of someone thought to be missing.
Deputies discovered two people deceased on the property.
Raleigh NBC affiliate WRAL reports the deaths occurred at a home at 7218 N.C. Highway 33. Property records show the home is owned by Leggett Mayor Gary Skelton and his wife Jackie Dawn Skelton.
A town commissioner identified the deceased as the mayor and his wife.
The sheriff's office says victim's names are not being released at this time per the wishes of their family.
They also say, at this time, no one else is believed to be in danger.
Suspects are in custody.
