Two-county chase lands pair in jail after home break-in

MARTIN COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Two Plymouth men are behind bars after deputies say they were involved in a two-county chase here in Eastern Carolina.

Martin County deputies say it began after a home in Jamesville was broken into.

Deputies say they spotted the suspects car leaving the area. They managed to stop the car on Tar Landing Road when the front seat passenger jumped and ran into some nearby woods. The vehicle then took off.

They began chasing the vehicle and it ended up on U.S. 64 into Washington County. Deputies there continued to chase the car. They say the vehicle hit a Washington County deputy's patrol car at Highway 32 and Spruill Loop Road.

Shaquille Burnette was then taken into custody, while it turns out the passenger who ran was eventually picked up by another vehicle. Washington County deputies found that vehicle on Wards Road in Plymouth and Latre Small was taken into custody.

Martin County deputies say they learned a second home was broken into on Mill Neck Road and that they found evidence inside the vehicle that linked the two to both B&Es.

The 25-year-old Burnette is charged with felony breaking and entering (2 counts), felony larceny after breaking and entering (2 counts), larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, injury to personal property, and felony flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle.

Small, also 25, is charged with felony breaking and entering (2 counts), felony larceny after breaking and entering (2 counts), larceny of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting a public officer, and injury to personal property.

Both men are being held on $100,000 secured bonds and have court dates for Wednesday.
