A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Lenoir, Duplin, Jones, Craven and Onslow counties until 3:15 pm. A line of severe thunderstorms was moving to the east-southeast at 35 mph through the warned areas at 2:45 pm. The storms could produce wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, along with heavy downpours, frequent lightning and 1" diameter hailstones within the warned area.
There have been reports of damage to a mobile home in the Vanceboro area as well as a few trees down near Chocowinity from a strong thunderstorm as it passed through the area around 12:00 to 12:30 pm.
More strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are likely to form as we head through the afternoon and into the evening hours. Any storms that do form will bring heavy downpours along with frequent lighting. Storms may also produce nickel size hail along with wind gusts to 60 mph.
The risk of tornadoes is low, but not out of the question through the late afternoon/evening hours.
