Four people were rescued after their boat engines caught fire Sunday evening near Fort Macon.

The U.S. Coast Guard pulled three people from Back Sound and rescued another from the boat around 6:00 p.m.

Carteret County authorities got the distress call and notified the Coast Guard.

A 24-foot boat from the Coast Guard station at Fort Macon quickly rescued the four.

The Coast Guard says two of the three people found in the water were wearing life jackets. "Thinking that you can put on a life jacket right before you enter the water is dangerous. We recommend that you wear your life jacket while boating to be prepared in the event of an emergency," said Petty Officer 3rd Class James Sellers
