Three charged with stealing from NC DOT in Wayne Co.

Three people are now behind bars after the Wayne County Sheriff's Office says they stole property from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

On Sunday, the NC DOT reported property valued at $102,730.10 was stolen, deputies said.

Wayne County Sheriff's Office has charged Michael Cavanagh, 54, Renee Whisenant, 43, and Charles Bryant Jr., 42, in connection with the larceny.

Cavanagh is facing five counts of felony larceny, five counts of possession of stolen goods and five counts of obtaining property by false pretense. He is being held under a $141,000 secured bond.

Whisentant is facing two counts of felony larceny, two counts of possession of stolen goods, and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense. She is being held under a $60,000 secured bond.

Bryant is facing five counts of larceny by employee, five counts of embezzlement and five counts of obtaining property by false pretense. He is being held under a $75,000 bond.

Authorities did not provide any other details about what was stolen. The Sheriff's Office says they are continuing to investigate and expect to make more charges in this case.
