Thousands of military graves honored with wreaths for the holidays

NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - The graves of thousands of service members were honored this holiday season in Eastern Carolina.

In honor of National Wreaths Across America Day every grave at the national cemeteries in Jacksonville and New Bern are now looking a little more festive.

Green and red decorations stand out among the 6,000 gray headstones inside New Bern National Cemetery.

All the wreaths were donated to remember and honor these veterans.

Wreaths Across America organized the event, and even though they had to stop fundraising for six weeks after Hurricane Florence, every grave was adorned with a wreath Saturday.

"We have a very big veteran community here in Eastern North Carolina and they love to support programs like this," Wreaths Across America Location Coordinator Kevin Yates said.

Each of the wreaths cost $15 to donate and organizers say they are already looking ahead to collecting wreaths for next Christmas.
