BEAUFORT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - Thousands of dead fish have been found in the Pamlico River.
Residents of Blounts Creek say they first noticed the dead fish this morning.
Some of the dead fish have littered the beach, while others are still floating in the water.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is looking into the fish kill.
Forrest English, the Pamlico/Tar Riverkeeper, says fish kills often happen when there's a lack of dissolved oxygen in the river. He said the most common reasons for that are heat and nutrient pollution in the water which uses up all available oxygen.
