TARBORO, N.C. (WITN) - A lockdown at an Eastern Carolina high school has been lifted after a suspicious person was seen near its campus on Monday.
Tarboro police say just before noon they got a call about a person walking along Howard Avenue carrying a bag with what appeared to be the barrel of a rifle sticking out from it.
This was just two blocks away from Tarboro High School, and the person was walking towards the campus, according to police.
The school went on lockdown as a precaution while police and deputies saturated the campus and surrounding area.
Police said no one with a firearm was ever located after an in-depth search.
The school lifted the lockdown and the facility resumed normal operations, according to police.
Police did say some parents came to the school during the lockdown, which only strained critical resources and created additional concerns.
They ask parents not to come to schools during these situations and understand that police have all available resources devoted to protecting the children.
