Kinston police have arrested a suspect in a 10-year-old murder case.

On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, 24-year-old Kenneth Roosevelt Cannon was shot and killed while standing in front of the 7 building of Carver Courts Apartments just after 9:00 pm. The case has remained under investigation by members of the Kinston Police Department since that time.

On November 29, 2017, KPD Investigators obtained a warrant for the arrest of 33-year-old James Leon Estep Jr., of Greensboro, for murder in this case.

Estep, who was developed as a potential suspect early in the investigation and has remained a potential suspect for the past 10 years, was taken into custody without incident during a targeted traffic stop on 800 Block of Chestnut Street in Kinston on Friday, December 01, shortly before 8:00 pm.

Estep will have a first appearance in Lenoir County District Court on Monday.
