The National Park Service says a 32-year-old North Carolina resident has died while surfing in waters off Old Lighthouse Beach outside of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Jordan Bartholomew was spotted off the beach by a bystander that noticed he was face down in the water on Saturday afternoon.

Bystanders brought Bartholomew to shore and immediately called 911 and began CPR.

Dare County EMS and Sheriff's deputies responded alongside Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, and National Park Service staff.

Bartholomew did not respond to additional resuscitation efforts provided by emergency responders and was pronounced dead on scene.

According to a NPS news release, the cause of death is unknown at this time.

"The National Park Service's extends our condolences to Jordan's friends and family" said Seashore Superintendent David Hallac.
