BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A teenager is recovering from a shark bite along our coast.
Austin Reed was bitten by a shark while surfing off Ocean Isle Beach Monday afternoon.
The 19-year-old was surfing with a friend when he felt a bite on his foot.
"The waves were really big so I thought it was going to be a really fun day and I go out there and I'm like wow the waves are really big and I told him for some reason that if any day were I to get bitten by a shark it would be today," Reed said. "I don't know why I said that. The water just looked kind of not really like sharky, but it just looked weird for some reason then he just said, ha ha."
Reed, who will be a sophomore at UNC Wilmington. is in good condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He underwent surgery on his foot Monday night.
The teen's mom is a registered nurse. She wrapped his foot in a towel and applied pressure until paramedics arrived.
His brother says he's a tough guy and is expected to be okay.
"I didn't really get to talk to him much because he was kind of in shock. He didn't really like the attention. He was telling everyone he's fine. He's a tough guy. He was just waiting on the paramedics to get there," said Ethan Reed.
The surfer said he hopes his experience doesn't scare others away from the beach. Reed says he plans to be back on his board once he recovers.
This the second teen to be bitten by a shark off our coast so far this month.
Paige Winter, of New Bern, is still recovering after a shark attack June 2nd at Fort Macon. The 17-year-old had to have a leg amputated and extensive surgery on her hands.
