One very special principal got a big surprise from students and teachers at her school Friday.

Tucker Creek Principal Claudia Casey was off campus for a meeting when she received an unexpected phone call, asking her to come back to school. When she arrived, she found her students and staff gathered in the gym to announce she had won Craven County's principal of the year award.

"I'm still taking it all in," said Casey.

Casey was selected out of all 25 principals in the school system. Fellow principals nominate each other, and 3 finalists are selected. A committee interviews the finalists to determine the winner.

Casey thanked her students and staff. She said she comes to work every day to do her best for the kids.

"Especially as a middle school principal, giving our kids all the opportunities to discover themselves, to learn about their strengths and their interests, and prepare them for a world that is ever-changing," she added.

The Craven County Schools superintendent was there as part of the surprise to tell Casey she won the award.
