Deputies say a gun found Monday at Craven Community College was loaded, but they still don't know why a student brought the weapon on campus.

Brandon Grist, 21, was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm and felony possession of a firearm on education property.

The community college was put on lockdown for around 45 minutes.

Deputies say Grist, who is enrolled in the GED program, had hidden the firearm to avoid being caught.

The college says another student spotted Grist with the weapon in a stairwell of the Business Information and Technology Building and alerted authorities.

Grist posted a $25,000 bond and was released from jail. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday in New Bern.

Records show the man has prior convictions for larceny and possessing stolen goods from Onslow and Craven counties. On those 2016 convictions, Grist was given a suspended sentence and put on probation.
