WASHINGTON, NC (WITN) - Barbecue is set to start smoking tonight as thousands are expected to arrive in one Eastern Carolina city.
The annual Smoke on the Water Barbecue Competition kicked off Friday night on the Washington waterfront.
The start of the pig parade got the festival underway with people lining up to either watch or parade through the streets themselves.
Teams set up their tents and chief cooks learned the basics of what to expect with the competition and weekend.
One team called the Downeast Barbecue Boys out of Belhaven said they've competed the last 3 years in a row and they're vying for the showmanship competition also, which is all about booth decorations.
The downeast barbecue boys say their secret is to Use a mix of oak and maple wood to barbecue and they say they're one of only 3 teams using wood to cook the BBQ.
