Troopers say a man was killed and his wife airlifted to a trauma center after an 18-wheeler flipped over onto their SUV.

The accident happened around 1:00 p.m. on Highway 11 between Deep Run and Pink Hill at Hills Crossroads.

The Highway Patrol says one of the 18-wheelers was heading north on Highway 11 when the second big rig pulled out in front of it.

Troopers say the northbound rig swerved, clipped the front of the other tractor trailer, and then hit the SUV which was stopped at the stop sign on Davis Mill Road.

The SUV went into a tailspin, and the truck, which was carrying turkey or chicken waste, flipped over onto the vehicle.

Troopers have identified the dead man as Stacy Smith, 68, of Deep Run. They say his 48-year-old wife, Melissa Smith, was driving the SUV.

She had to be freed from the wreckage and was flown to Vidant Medical Center.

The Highway Patrol has charged the tractor trailer driver that pulled out in front of the other big rig, Steven Brunt, 20, from Jacksonville, with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The other tractor trailer driver, Lance Long of Richlands, was not charged.

Northbound lanes of Highway 11 were shut down for three hours because of the crash.
