The body of a missing Tyrrell County boater has been found.

Sheriff Darryl Liverman says a boat from Hertford County Emergency Management, equipped with sonar, found John Sheriff's body around 12:50 p.m.

The man's body was located within the search area, according to Liverman.

Authorities got a call late Thursday morning about a 17-foot center console boat going around in circles in Alligator Creek, and that no one appeared to be on board.

Multiple agencies looked for the 52-year-old Columbia man on Thursday, including a boat with sonar and a Coast Guard helicopter. The search was suspended because of nightfall and resumed this morning.

Liverman said the man borrowed the boat from a friend and was using it to get to and from a cabin where he was doing carpentry work.

The sheriff says they don't know if the man fell overboard or had a medical condition.

The North Carolina Wildlife Commission is investigating what happened.
