School bus driver charged after morning crash in Bertie County

BERTIE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - A school bus driver has been charged after a morning bus crash that sent eight students to the hospital.

The Highway Patrol says the accident involved a bus from Bertie High School and happened around 7:30 a.m. on Ashland Church Road.

Troopers say the bus was turning onto Highway 45 when it went off the road to the left and into a tree line.

The eight students were taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to the Highway Patrol. The school system they had minor bumps and other minor injuries. All were treated and released.

Trim Smallwood, 41, of Windsor was charged with driving left of center.
