Five Greenville teens charged in Lenoir County home break-in

Five Greenville teens have been charged with Monday's home break-in where one of them was shot by the homeowner.

Two of those arrested are athletes at J.H. Rose High School.

Lenoir County Sheriff Ronnie Ingram says the five have all been charged with breaking & entering, larceny after B&E, possession of stolen goods and felony conspiracy.

They are 17-year-old Nasym Harris, 17-year-old Darryl Blunt, Jr., 18-year-old Nyshiem Cantley, 17-year-old Tzyire Cantley, and 17-year-old Corey Jones, Jr.

A spokesman for Pitt County Schools says both Canteys and Blunt are current J.H. Rose students. The spokesman says the other two are former students at the school.

The school system says two of the current students are also athletes at J.H. Rose.

Ingram says Jones remains at Vidant Medical Center after the homeowner shot him in the arm as the group ran from the home on Tilghman Mill Road.

Jones has yet to go before a judge on the charges, while the others are being held on $40,000 secured bonds.

Deputies say the homeowner was notified of the break-in by his alarm and camera system. They say he alerted the sheriff's office while on his way home.

When he arrived, deputies say, the man encountered the teens and fired at them with his gun.

One of the teens was immediately caught by deputies, while Jones was found in a nearby field.

The other three were arrested around 10:00 p.m. after an extensive search in the Hugo area.

Multiple lawmen on the ground were aided by several K9s and a Highway Patrol helicopter.

The sheriff says at this time they do not expect any charges to be brought against the homeowner.

One person was shot Monday afternoon when homeowners found their residence had been broken into.

Lenoir County Sheriff Ronnie Ingram says it happened around 2:45 p.m. on Tilghman Mill Road in the Hugo community.

The sheriff says the homeowner arrived and found four people still inside. The four ran, according to Ingram, and the homeowner started firing at them.

One of the burglars was hit in the arm and has non-life threatening injuries, Ingram says. Another suspect was nabbed nearby, and deputies used K-9s and a helicopter to locate three more.

Those three were found late Monday night in a field along Hugo Road and Highway 58 about a mile and a half from the house.

Ingram says the homeowner was alerted to the break-in by a home camera system. Video from the system showed four people inside.

Contentnea-Savannah school is about 2-1/2 miles away. A school system spokesman says buses were delayed for 45 minutes while others were routed away from the search area.

Soccer and softball games were also cancelled at the school.

School spokesman Patrick Homes say one bus was held at the school and parents were alerted to that situation.

Deputies had Tilghman Mill Road closed during the manhunt.
