If you get a call from someone telling you to replace your water meter, don't fall for it.

Officials with the city of Rocky Mount say multiple residents have received calls from an 855-304-9885 phone number, claiming to be with the city, telling customers to upgrade their water meters or risk having their water shut off.

Hoping to generate panic, the scammer will then ask customers to pay more than $400 immediately, hand over their customer account number and share information from their most recent payment, including a receipt number.

Once you do, know that a new water meter isn't coming.

Instead, you'll be short a large chunk of cash and scammers will have access to your personal account information.

While the best way to avoid the scam altogether is to not pick up the phone, city officials are offering additional ways to help.

The city of Rocky Mount Business Office says they have an automated calling system that reminds customers of overdue payments, but you’ll never be asked to immediately pay over the phone.

If you want to pay over the phone, you'll be asked to call Customer Service at 252-972-1250 or the toll-free number 866-288-7608.

The city also says you'll never be asked to meet them for a payment or wire funds.

Lastly, there are no retail outlets authorized to accept payments for the city, according to officials.

Customers who receive a scam call are urged to hang up immediately and call the Customer Service number listed above to double check whether or not the city is trying to contact them.
