Raleigh corrections officer attacked by inmate

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - A corrections officer is recovering from her injuries after she was attacked by an inmate at a state prison Thursday.

The attack happened at the Women's Correctional Facility in Raleigh shortly after 8 a.m.

The officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries and has since been released from a local hospital.

A spokesman for the State Department of Corrections could not comment about the incident or whether a weapon was used in the assault, but an investigation is underway.

The attack comes just two weeks after the deadly attempted prison escape in Pasquotank County that left two prison employees dead and eight others injured.

Earlier this spring, Sgt. Meggan Callahan was attacked and killed by an inmate at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor.

The State Department of Public Safety is reviewing procedures and says they're working to improve security at prisons statewide.
