Precautionary swimming advisory for portion of Cedar Island

CARTERET COUNTY, NC (WITN) State health officials are advising against swimming in one sound side area of Carteret County.

State recreational water quality officials say you should stay out of the water around 1,000 feet southeast of the public boat ramp adjacent to the ferry landing in Cedar Island.

The advisory is being issued due to potential health risks resulting from the placement of dredged material on the beach.

Dredging is scheduled to begin Saturday and officials say dredge material collected from prohibited shellfishing waters can contain contaminants that make people sick.
