ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC (WITN) - Police say a stolen handgun was found hidden near one Eastern Carolina middle school this morning.

Roanoke Rapids police say they were called to the Lewis Street area after a homeowner noticed some suspicious activity.

Police say the resident saw a young boy around a bush and thought he was acting suspiciously. An officer found a handgun in the bush and they notified Chaloner Middle School which is about a block away.

The boy has been identified, according to police, and his parents have been notified.

Officers say the gun was stolen out of a car in Roanoke Rapids and that the boy will be charged in the case.

The gun had ammunition in it, but was not ready to fire, police said.

Police stress the gun never made it to the school campus and credit an observant homeowner with helping find the weapon and identifying the child.
