Player of the Week: Madison Bowers
D.H. Conley softball standout and future ECU Pirate Madison Bowers is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
The D.H. Conley varsity softball team is on a mission. The Lady Vikings recently claimed the Eastern Carolina 3A/4A conference title.
But the goal is to claim another state championship, and helping lead that cause for the Lady Vikings is senior infielder and ECU commit, Madison Bowers.
"I started playing when I was four," said Bowers. "I caught the fever for [softball] as soon as I started. I just love the game."
Bowers loves the game of softball, and it loves her right back.
"She has a very good bat," said D.H. Conley head coach Wayne Deans. "She hits the ball very well. Defensively, she does a very good job as well, being a middle infielder. And she's a good base runner. She has good speed, and she's very smart on the bases."
So Bowers is cerebral, smart and talented, but more importantly, she's a great teammate.
"I've been told I have a good leadership quality about me, and that I kind of bring the team up, and I try to do my best to not only be a leader on the field but in the dugout and try my best to cheer everyone up," Bowers explained.
"She has a high expectation of her performance," added Deans. "And the good thing is she kind of holds that for others, as well. But that's a sign of someone who cares. And when you care, you're always wanting to be your best."
Bowers represents the best D.H. Conley has to offer. The future Pirate is a five-tool player who inked her commitment to ECU this past fall.
"I've grown up here," said Bowers. "I've lived here my whole life, and I grew up going to [ECU] football games, and I just love Pirate Nation, and I can't wait to be a part of it."
Bowers is the oldest sibling of three and is so eager to join the ECU softball team next fall, but she has some unfinished business to take care of at D.H. Conley first.
"I'm trying not to think too far ahead," said Bowers. "I'm excited, and I'm ready to be out there, but I have a state championship to win right now."
Up next for Bowers and the Lady Vikings (19-1) is the Eastern Carolina 3A/4A conference tournament. As the top seed, they not only get to host but also receive a first-round bye. So that means they will play the winner of Southern Wayne and New Bern in the semifinals next Wednesday, May 1 at D.H. Conley High School. Time TBD.
