Player of the Week: Maddy May
D.H. Conley sophomore volleyball standout Maddy May is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
D.H. Conley is home to one of the top girls volleyball programs in the entire state. In fact, the Vikings have won 18 or more matches in each of the last seven seasons.
This year, the Vikings are 16-2 (7-1) and just two wins away from extending that streak to eight seasons.
Leading the way for the Vikings is sophomore outside hitter Maddy May.
"I do not believe there's a kid that outworks Maddy May," head coach Jennifer Gillikin said.
Since starting the sport at the age of eight, Maddy May has used a disciplined work ethic to achieve everything she's earned.
"I'm never satisfied with where I'm at," said May. "In my mind, I'm the hardest worker on the court, even if that's not true. And if that's not true, I hope my teammates are working as hard as I am."
"She brings it every single day," added Gillikin. "She not only wants to improve as a player, but she wants to help the players around her improve, as well. She's a great teammate."
Only a sophomore, May is already being heavily recruited by Division I volleyball programs. Her dream is to play in the Big Ten, while also studying to become a surgeon.
"Without a doubt, I feel like she has the potential to play Division I, especially at the rate she's growing as a player," Gillikin said.
"My mom has taught me to dream big from a very young age with hard work," added May. "It's pretty natural. I'm like that with academics and everything."
On the court, May says she is very serious, but off the court she describes herself as a quirky perfectionist.
"She elevates everybody around her," said Gillikin. "She pushes everybody to run a little faster or jump a little higher. I just think she's a great kid to have on the team."
May and the Vikings will look to extend their winning streak to four Wednesday afternoon at New Bern. D.H. Conley beat the Bears in four sets back on October 1.
