Player of the Week: Ka'Nyah O'Neal
Southside freshman basketball standout Ka'Nyah O'Neal is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
After losing two of three to start the season, the Southside varsity girls basketball team has suddenly won eight of its last nine games. So, now the Seahawks are flying high with a 9-3 record.
Leading the way for the 'Hawks turnaround this season has been freshman phenom Ka'Nyah O'Neal.
Seahawks head coach Milton Ruffin describes his star freshman as a silent assassin on the hardwood.
"When she's on the court, she's in command," said Ruffin. "You would never see her out of control. She's just a fantastic player to watch and fun to coach."
But O'Neal says she's a clown.
"I'm very funny," O'Neal said.
Either way, the ninth grader can flat out ball!
"I'm glad she's on my team," Ruffin added.
Through 12 games, O'Neal is averaging 20 points, nine rebounds and six steals per game! Those are some crazy numbers for a freshman!
"I'm a good passer, a good shooter and a good teammate," O'Neal said.
O'Neal credits her work ethic for her early success.
"The sky is the limit," said. Ruffin. "She's just a freshman. She's getting her feet wet playing high school basketball, and if she continues to work hard and do what she do, I think some good things are going to happen for her."
Next up for O'Neal and the Seahawks is another Coastal Plains 1A matchup against Riverside this upcoming Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Southside High School.
