Player of the Week: Jake Raynor
Riverside baseball senior standout Jake Raynor is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
The postseason is right around the corner for high school baseball, and one team to look out for come playoff time is Riverside. The Knights are 19-2 and currently riding an 18-game winning streak.
Now a lot of the team's success can be traced back to its big senior class. Jake Raynor is one of 11 seniors!
But few players are often as versatile as Jake Raynor. The Riverside senior can hit everywhere and play anywhere.
"Jake works really hard," said Riverside head baseball coach Leonard Allen. "He's here in the offseason. He puts a lot of time in during the offseason when some guys are playing other sports. He's a big leader for us. He comes out here and works extra before practice, after practice. He's always taking swings in the cage."
That hard work has led to some big numbers for Raynor. In his two-year varsity career, Raynor is hitting .377 with 57 hits, 39 RBI and 50 runs scored in 51 games played.
"Just work hard and it will pay off when it counts," said Raynor. "Every little extra bit of practice will definitely help. One extra cut here, one extra cut there, eventually it adds up over time and it will count in the long run."
Raynor has also turned into the Knights' Tuesday starting pitcher this season.
And all of his numbers are nice, but it's his leadership that makes all the difference.
"His leadership has been, like I said, above and beyond this year," added Allen. "That's one big thing I'm going to miss about him."
"My parents raised me if I can tell something is going wrong, try to help and correct that to get it the best we can," Raynor added.
Raynor and the Knights play their second-to-last Coastal Plains 1A conference game of the regular season Tuesday night against Tarboro. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Riverside.
