Player of the Week: Alan Rubio

Greene Central junior soccer standout Alan Rubio is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
Over the past three seasons, Greene Central has featured one of the most consistent, and successful, boys soccer programs in the entire state. The Rams registered 15 wins in 2017, 17 wins in 2018 and are currently 16-2 during their 2019 campaign.
Leading the way offensively for the Rams is striker Alan Rubio. The junior has accumulated 35 goals, eight assists and 78 points in just 18 games played.
Rubio was not able to play soccer last year, but that in turn has motivated him to have a standout junior season.
"I'm having a lot of fun scoring a lot of goals," Rubio said before the Rams' 10-1 win over Kinston Monday night.
Rubio is averaging nearly two goals per game.
"He's a dominant player and a team player," senior striker Ulises Mora added.
But since Rubio sat out his sophomore season, his offensive production this year has been somewhat surprising.
"This year, he was kind of a surprise, a pleasant surprise," said head coach Matthew Gnau. "We knew he was going to be good, but we didn't expect him to be as prolific a scorer as he has been."
Rubio is strong on the ball, wreaks havoc with heavy pressure and has a cannon of a right and left foot.
"He has all the tools," added Gnau. "He's got the strength. He's got the skill on the ball, and he continues to be a great human being and a great soccer player."
