Player of the Week: Emily Dykes
Ayden-Grifton senior volleyball standout Emily Dykes is our newest WITN Pepsi Player of the Week!
After defeating Carrboro in a five-set thriller this past Saturday, the Ayden-Grifton volleyball team is heading back to the 2A state regionals.
That fourth round win over the Jaguars is thanks in large part to Emily Dykes. The middle blocker and middle hitter was a force up front that night, leading the Chargers with a team-high 20 kills.
"She's just an awesome girl," said head coach Linda Bryant. "She brings the power."
In her third varsity season with the Chargers, Dykes is a nightmare for her opponents.
"Aggression is definitely a big thing, especially when I put the ball down, it just hypes everyone up," Dykes said.
The senior is putting up some crazy numbers this season. She's leading all hitters with 341 kills, while converting on nearly 60 percent of her swings.
"She loves the game, and what makes her excited about the game is whenever she gets a big kill or a block and then her teammates all come together and cheer her on," Bryant added.
Dykes is also averaging nearly five kills per set and putting that fright into those on the other side of the net.
"I know that the goal is to put the ball down, and when I put the ball down, we get a point and it just keeps adding up after that," Dykes said.
Now Dykes gets in done in the classroom, as well. She's second in her class with a 4.4 GPA and is already committed to playing volleyball at Radford next year.
"I'm actually super excited because I've always wanted to play sports in college," Dykes added.
Dykes and the No. 3 Chargers (21-5) face No. 1 Wheatmore (27-2) in the regional round of the 2019 2A Volleyball State Championship
at 6:30 p.m. The winner will earn a trip to the 2A State Championship on Saturday, November 9.
The Chargers upset Wheatmore and will now play in the 2A Volleyball State Championship Saturday night.
