Dinosaurs at this year's Pitt County Fair

PITT COUNTY, NC (WITN) - The Pitt County fair is back in the East this week for its 100th fair event in Pitt County. This year, one of the main attractions is a live dinosaur exhibit.

The free show is called Dakota and Friends and offers a unique fun and learning experience for visitors of all ages.

During the show, visitors can watch a baby dinosaur hatch or children can ride dinosaurs and read facts about when the prehistoric creatures roamed the earth.

The fair runs through Sunday with a live dinosaur show every few hours at the fairgrounds.

Ed Bounds with the Dakota and Friends dinosaur exhibit said the live show is a fun way to teach children about interesting aspects of dinosaurs.

There are also many other fun events to explore at the Pitt County Fair such as live animal exhibits, rides, exhibit halls and of course all the carnival food you can eat.

***PREVIOUS STORY***

Cooler weather is arriving just in time for a fall season tradition. The Pitt County Fair returns for its 100th year this week.

A lot has changed since the fair first opened in 1919, but what brings people back to the fairgrounds remains the same.

"I like the food," said Iyana Pitt. "I'm excited to ride all the rides."

Pitt County Fair executives say it's rare for a county fair to last this long. There used to be 100 county fairs across the state. Now, there's less than 50.

"Other places really can't do that just because it's so small, but Greenville is so wide and diverse. Everyone can come together here," said Jarrett Lancaster.

American Legion Post 39 made sure the fair would always return through the Great Depression, World War II and after hurricanes.

When the Ferris Wheel spins over Highway 264, people come from surrounding counties and as far away as Virginia.

"This is here for the community and that's what it's all about, giving back to the community," says fair executive Phyllis Ross.

Some of the money raised by the Pitt County Fair goes towards scholarships at East Carolina University and Pitt Community College. The rest will go toward putting on next year's fair.

The Pitt County Fair runs through Sunday, September 22nd.
