Pine Knoll Shores Police Department hosts food drive

PINE KNOLL SHORES, (WITN) The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department is partnering with a local food pantry to collect non-perishable items .

The police department is focusing on serving their community and beyond with the food drive for Martha's Mission Cupboard in Morehead City.

Police Chief Ryan Thompson says, "That's the mentality we try to foster here townwide that we are here to serve and we're not here to serve one particular group, we're not just here to serve the residents of Pine Knoll Shores, we are here to serve the entire county and so it's a really proud moment for me that my officers wanted to go above and beyond and volunteer their time and their money to do a program like this."

Over the last week the police department has been collecting non-perishable food and gift cards that will go to Martha's Mission to distribute the food and feed as many people as possible this holiday season.

Thompson says, "This time of year everyone could use extra help you know some folks more than others with basic needs and necessities like having a hot meal around a holiday and I think this year it's going to be even more important, everybody in our county was affected from Hurricane Florence and some are going to be in a recovery state for years."

The food drive will continue until Friday December 21st then officers will use donated gift cards to buy perishable food items like turkey's for Martha's Mission to give out.

You can drop off items or gift cards at the Pine Knoll Shores Police Department or town hall.
