Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium holds Facebook naming contest for eagles

PINE KNOLL SHORES, (WITN) The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is caring for two female bald eagles and would like the public’s help choosing their names.

Facebook users have the opportunity to vote on their names. Voting will end at midnight Friday, March 15. The aquarium will announce the winning names Saturday.

The first bald eagle to arrive at the aquarium came from the Cape Fear Raptor Center in Rocky Point. She is a juvenile who had both wings amputated near the wrist after flying into a powerline. The second bald eagle is an adult female who came to the aquarium from TreeHouse Wildlife Center in Dow, Illinois, with her left wing amputated just below the elbow after being found with an irreparable injury.

Both are unable to fly and would not survive in the wild.

Votes can be place on the aquarium’s Facebook page.

The eagles' permanent home will be constructed along the marsh boardwalk and is scheduled to be open Memorial Day weekend.
