UPDATE: Man charged with attempted murder in shooting of teen

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Greenville Police have charged a man in connection to the shooting of a teenager from this past weekend.

Police arrested Donnie Dixon, 27, on Wednesday. He's charged with attempted first degree murder in the shooting of 16-year-old Layfield Smith.

According to arrest warrants, police believe Dixon shot Smith in the stomach with the intention to kill him.

The shooting happened around 5:30pm Saturday in the 100 block of Ridge Place. At the time, Police told WITN it looked like Smith's injuries were non life-threatening.

Dixon made his first appearance in Pitt County court Thursday morning where his $2,000,000 bond was set and he asked for the court to appoint him legal counsel. His next court date is scheduled for November 22.
