Update: Man charged in hospital stabbing

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WITN) - Authorities arrested a man in connection to a stabbing at Johnston Medical Center Saturday.

According to WRAL, Smithfield Police said Conner Sullivan, 25, was waiting to be treated at Johnston Medical Center when he assaulted a hospital staff member with a knife around 6:15 p.m..

Sullivan ran away from the scene, but was taken into custody about two blocks from the hospital.

He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The staff member, Eric Hammond, 52, suffered a life-threatening injury. Hammond was reportedly in fair condition Sunday evening.

Sullivan is being held at the Johnston County Detention Center under a $60,000 bond.

A hospital staff member suffered a life-threatening injury after they were stabbed by a patient Saturday evening at Johnston Medical Center.

The stabbing happened around 6:13 p.m. in the Emergency Department of the hospital, according to Smithfield Police.

The suspect had been waiting to be treated when he assaulted the staff member, police said.

The suspect then ran away, but was caught and taken into custody two blocks away from the hospital.

Smithfield Police are continuing to investigate this case.
