Man facing attempted murder charge after Tuesday night shooting

KINSTON, NC (WITN) - A man is facing an attempted murder charge in connection with a shooting Tuesday night in Kinston.

Kinston police arrested Bobby Lawson on South McDaniels Street around 3:30 p.m. today.

He was wanted for the shooting of Virgil Shaw last night. The 55-year-old Cove City man was shot in the shoulder and showed up at the police department.

Shaw was treated at Vidant Medical Center and later released.

Lawson was charged with attempted first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Police in one Eastern Carolina city now say a man found shot Tuesday night does not appear to be connected to an earlier shooting.

Kinston police say 55-year-old Virgil Shaw showed up at the police department around 8:00 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The Cove City man was taken to Vidant Medical Center where he was treated and released.

About 90 minutes earlier, officers were called to several shots fired calls. They learned the shooting happened near Sherwood Avenue and East Street.

SWAT teams from the police department and sheriff's office were called in after they learned one of the shooters might be inside a home. After a search, police say no one was found.

In the Shaw shooting, police say it appears the man was shot by an acquaintance, but so far no arrests have been made.
