ASHEVILLE, NC (WITN) - A mother is charged with attempted murder after first telling police that she and her seven-week-old daughter were kidnapped.
Krista Madden was charged last night with attempted first degree murder and is being held on a $750,000 bond.
Asheville police say they received a report that Madden and her daughter had been kidnapped Thursday afternoon.
The woman told police that two people wearing ski masks abducted the two from an Asheville street and were in a Mazda CX5.
Madden and the vehicle were found about 30 miles away in Henderson County, while the baby was discovered down a 75-foot ravine along a road.
Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin said it appears the baby was thrown while in a car seat. The child is believed to be in good condition, according to the sheriff.
A woman last night checking her mailbox thought she heard the faint sound of a baby crying. She and her husband began searching and he ended up finding the baby.
Authorities believe Madden acted alone.
