Owners urged to keep pets safe in heat

With more hot weather on the way today, it's important to take care of yourself and your furry friends.

The Humane Society of the United States says hot weather like this can make everyday activities like walking your dog dangerous.

They say to adjust the time of day your pet exercises. It's best to walk them in the early morning or evening hours when temperatures are coolest.

They also say to walk your dog on the grass if possible because hot cement could burn their paws.

Always carry extra water on you.

If your pet starts panting heavily or sweating through their paws, get them out of the heat and apply an ice pack or cool towel to their head, neck and chest.
