Man charged by deputies with murder of Onslow County man

A man is facing charges by deputies for a murder outside of Jacksonville last week.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says that Deon Townsell, 20, of Jacksonville, was arrested during a traffic stop on Monday.

Townsell has been charged by deputies with an open count of murder in the death of Nicholas Matthews, 33, of Jacksonville.

It was on May 27th that deputies responded to Myna Drive for a report of a robbery and shooting. They later found out that Matthews had been taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital by private vehicle for gunshot wounds. He be pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials say the investigationis ongoing and additional charges are expected.

An Onslow County man is dead after a shooting Wednesday night.

Deputies say they were called around 9:40 p.m. to the area of Myna Drive for a robbery and shooting. When they arrived, deputies couldn't find a victim or any witnesses.

Deputies then learned the victim, 33-year-old Nicholas Matthews, had been taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle. The man died at the hospital, and deputies say a preliminary cause of death is gunshot wounds.

The sheriff's office hasn't said anything about possible suspects in the homicide, and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 910-455-3113.
