NEW BERN, NC (WITN) - We're getting the first look inside the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, more than seven months after it was damaged by Hurricane Florence.
Craven County previously cited safety concerns for not allowing the media inside the publicly owned building before today.
Assistant County Manager Gene Hodges says storm debris broke a window and that's how they believe the storm surge got inside the building.
He said clean up crews that came in immediately after the storm believe they saw alligator tracks inside.
Hodges says rough estimates say between $2-$3 million in work will need to be done before the facility can reopen.
He said they are in the first phase of work which is leveling the floor. That project was actually planned for next year, but they decided to bump it up and do it before fixing the rest of the convention center.
Hodges says they are hoping to reopen sometime in September.
