Off-duty New Jersey state trooper saves woman from OBX rips

DARE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - An off-duty New Jersey state trooper rescued a woman over the weekend while at Cape Hatteras.

New Jersey State Police say Trooper Craig Kempinski was vacationing with his family in Dare County on Saturday.

The trooper's wife first alerted him to a woman caught in the rip current some 200 yards offshore.

Kempinski said he knew he had to get to her as quickly as possible.

The trooper, who has had water rescue training, used a boogie board to get to the woman. She was exhausted and could barely stay above water, so he gave her the boogie board.

With the help of a paddle-boarder, Kempinski got the victim back to shore. Despite swallowing some water and being exhausted, the woman wasn't injured.

New Jersey State Police say Kempinski's quick actions undoubtedly helped prevent a tragedy.
