OBX motorcyclist critically injured in Thursday evening crash

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC (WITN) - A motorcyclist on the Outer Banks was critically injured after police say she pulled out in front of an oncoming SUV.

Kill Devil Hills police say the crash happened shortly after 5:00 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 158 and West Avalon Drive.

Police say the motorcyclist, a 54-year-old woman from Kill Devil Hills, was on West Avalon at the stop sign and tried to make a left turn onto U.S. 158. They said she apparently didn't realize how close the SUV was to the intersection.

The woman, who's name hasn't been released yet, was airlifted to a Virginia hospital in critical condition.

All lanes of the busy highway were shut down for about an hour due to the crash.
