New high rise span opens as locals say goodbye to Surf City swing bridge

SURF CITY, N.C. (WITN) - A part of Eastern Carolina history was replaced today with the opening of a new high rise bridge to Surf City.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation officially opened the new span across the Intracoastal Waterway, replacing the swing bridge that’s been in operation since 1955.

Hundreds of people gathered to say goodbye to the island’s landmark. Many put their names and photos on the bridge, while a local couple even got married on it this morning.

While locals say they grew to love the old bridge, many are looking forward to the convenience of the new one that has a $53 million price tag.

The old bridge will be demolished by the spring, leaving the state with just five swing bridges left in operation.
