New Gamma Knife Unit at Vidant to improve cancer treatment

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Vidant Medical Center has a new piece of equipment to improve cancer treatment in Eastern Carolina.

The new machinery is called the Gamma Knife. There are only about 100 of these in the country.

The Gamma Knife Unit is able to deliver a higher dose of radiation to a very small area without making an incision.

The treatment works by destroying cells so they don't grow, shrinking the size of the lesion or tumor over time.

Vidant Medical Center is one of only two hospitals with a gamma knife in our state.
