New Bern residents still rebuilding one year after Hurricane Florence

NEW BERN, NC (WITN) - Saturday marks the first anniversary of Hurricane Florence and many residents and business owners in New Bern's historic district are among many still recovering one year after the devastating hurricane.

The New Bern Historical Society executive director says Hurricane Florence effected the historical tourism in New Bern and many historic homes and buildings.

Historic New Bern is about 300 years old and Executive Director Mickey Miller said historic homes are important to New Bern. She adds it's been tough for many owners of historic buildings to recover after being displaced because of the storm.

Miller said, "A lot of handy work had to be recreated and things had to be done a little bit different way than they might have been done, say in a suburban-like tract home."

Miller said about 70% of business and historic building owners are back in their buildings and she expects the remainder of the historic businesses to be repaired within the coming months.
