NEW BERN, NC (WITN) Some first responders in the east are getting some peace of mind about the safety of their homes while they respond to the needs of others.
State Farm Insurance has donated 150 Canary home protection devices to both New Bern and the Township 7 Volunteer Fire Departments.
The donation comes after Craven County first responders worked around the clock to help residents during Hurricane Florence without knowing the status of their own homes.
The Canary devices provide home security and also monitors air condition for signs of fire or other dangers.
New Bern Fire Chief Robert Boyd says, "Having somebody looking out for us, as a fire chief, it makes me feel good knowing my employees are being protected by others."
Firefighters can link the system to their cell phones and monitor their property while on the job.
